09/30/2011

In the last days Ive been working in finding the bouyancy of the AUV. As of right now I know that aproximately the weigh of the frame will weight about 29 pounds. I also weighted some of the electrical componets that were available to weight. I had to weigh a Seabotix truster that weighted about 700 grams and the scale that I had was not rated for that weight. So I puted weigh at the end of the balance and I learn that the more the weight it is away from the point the balance is being balace it will weight more. As of right now I am about 60% done to finish calculating the weight of the new AUV.

Last Wednesday I attended the mentor & referee meeting. We talked there about what are we going to do in the next days. Last week I helped Martin reset the mill. I had to to change the chuck to and replace it with an endmill device which I don't know its name. After that I cleaned the mill. Yes today I cut pieces of fiber glass and then I glued them together so Martin can use them for the jig. I also helped martin do some calculation that he needed to determinate the length of the slot in the jig where the fins were going to be placed. I also got more experience in the mill because Steve told us some tricks that we could use to improve our skill while milling. One thing that I learned is that when you tighten the chuck you put at least 5-10 lb of pressure not 50 or 60 lb that I use while tightening.
Today after school I had to teach a freshmen how to replace the blades In the Dremel. Then I tough How to use it. Five minutes before living after martin tested his toypedos I painted it Blue.

Wednesday I helped take apart the first robot that we built last year. I took apart mainly the most fragile components which were mostly electrical and mechanical. After that when the construction workshop for new members started I helped by teaching the new members how to use the tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, allen wrenches and others. I worked for about an hour taking apart the main frame and structure of the old robot. After that I helped the new members clean the robot room.
Today, Thursday I noticed that I was the only person to write in the AUV activity sheet during a gap of almost 4 weeks of inactivity.
In the morning Mr. Lajvardi, Martin and me tested the toypedo that Martin and company built. After that we got to the conclusion that the fins may bend because of the applied water pressure and speed that builds up while traveling at a fast speed. This caused the toypedo go down instead of going forward.
Minutes later I started to make a jig that will help us make our own fins. I had to cut some pieces of 1/4 fiber glass c channel (3 1/2 x 3 1/2). With this square pieces I glued them one on top of each other with epoxy to make a cube piece of fiber glass, this will be the main part to make the jig for the fins.
After school I helped host the mechanical/building/construction workshop. Todays lesson was how to use the hacksaw efficiently but at the same time fast. At the beginning I was counting the time people took to cut a 1/4 thick, one and half  angle of fiber glass. After that I supervised the new members by watching if they were doing the right thing. The last Friday I found a broom broke. I fixed it and today after the workshop I carved, with the mill, mine name on it because I fixed it.
Facts: over 5,100 words written on blog and more 27,000 characters typed. I expect to reach 10000 words by January.

09/07/2011

The last week I was working with the water filters and skimmers in the marine science. The first day I made one work but they look they are defectous. Then joach, a new member and me fixed the guills skimmer that was not working properly. We added at the end of tube another piece of tube so the water level will raise and the system will work properly. After that we were lookimg for ideas of how to use other skimmer systems but It look that they needed parts. The next day I connected three diferrent fish tanks and I made a water filter work for the three of them. The tubes that were connecting the tanks were half inch which is too small a large amount of water to pass trough. I stoped that project because I needed permission to change the tanks. I am also waiting what will happen next because I need another tank to finish the project.
